Hearing Impaired Regain Freedom with Advanced Technology

4/13/2011

Nearly 30 million Americans have some form of hearing loss. An estimated one in five people that need a hearing aid actually wear one. The number of young people with the condition is growing rapidly. Ogden Clinic, a physician-owned, multi-specialty group practice in northern Utah gives audiology patients the latest technology options to regain their hearing and lifestyle.

Many people struggle for years before coming to terms with the fact that they have lost their hearing. They spend thousands of dollars on different types of hearing aids only to be frustrated with them, and unable to hear while they participate in the activities they used to enjoy. Everyday activities are made more difficult, and many people adapt their lifestyle to accommodate hearing aids.

Ten years ago Dane Ashworth of Syracuse, Utah was entering an exciting time of his life. He had recently started his first big job and he and his wife were expecting their first child. However, he had also started to lose his hearing. The new development was a source of stress and embarrassment for Ashworth. He was constantly saying “what” and “huh” while trying to carry on normal conversations. When he couldn’t ask for clarification, he had to pretend to know what was going on.

Dane had tried many hearing aid options, but felt frustrated with the results, so he set out to find a new alternative that would enable him to continue his active lifestyle. After researching the benefits of the Lyric hearing aid, he turned to the audiology department at Ogden Clinic for confirmation and assistance. Laurel Brewer, a clinical audiologist listened to his concerns and frustrations and confirmed he was a good candidate for the Lyric.

Lyrics are placed deep in the ear canal rather than behind the ear or just inside the ear like traditional hearing aids and they are completely invisible from the outside. Due to the incredible technology behind the Lyric hearing aid, the user is able to hear more clearly while not obviously wearing a hearing aid.

Ashworth has used Lyric hearing aids for more than two years and it has changed his life. He is able to resume his favorite activities including riding motorcycles, playing basketball and working in his yard without experiencing any of the problems he faced with his previous hearing aids.

He recently stated, “I can happily say Lyric has changed my life. Now I go days without thinking about my hearing aids or my hearing loss. The staff at Ogden Clinic has always been so friendly and helpful. The audiology department, in particular, has treated me with respect and has made sure all of my questions and concerns are addressed.”

Ogden Clinic recommends Lyric hearing aids to their patients who have mild to moderate hearing loss. The initial appointment lasts about an hour and involves a comprehensive ear and hearing evaluation. Once it’s deemed an appropriate solution, the Lyric device is inserted and programmed for the patient. Follow up visits for replacement Lyrics last about ten minutes and occur approximately every three to four months.

Lyric hearing aids work differently than other hearing aids on the market. A Lyric trained hearing professional inserts them completely into the ear canal. This deep placement allows the outer ear to direct sound into the inner ear naturally, resulting in improved directionality and localization, reduced feedback and improved high frequency gain. Once inserted the devices work for up to 120 days, at which point a new pair of Lyrics is inserted.
