Erectile dysfunction (ED) may be an early sign of cardiovascular disease, especially for those men under 45 years of age. The Ogden Clinic, a
physician-owned multi-specialty group practice in Northern Utah is urging men to take the warning signs seriously.
More than 30 million men in the U.S. have erectile dysfunction and one in ten men worldwide. For those over the age of 65 the chances increase by 65
percent.
There is a growing consensus that ED can be a major risk factor for heart disease much like obesity, smoking or high cholesterol, especially for men
under the age of 45. The same factors that can clog up the arteries leading to heart attacks and strokes may also damage the blood vessels that supply
blood to the penis. It can be a precursor for heart problems that may come to fruition in four or five years.
“As a nation we are becoming more obese. Unfortunately, with those factors cardiovascular disease will continue to rise,” said Dr. Robert Wayment,
urologist at Ogden Clinic. “Because Utah is a conservative climate this problem is not being discussed. Men may think ED is a problem that occurs
naturally with age. As embarrassing as it is for some, those with symptoms should really consult a physician.”
In Utah one out of four deaths are due to heart disease. Findings suggest that men suffering from ED should see a provider for diagnosis and treatment
of possible cardiovascular risk factors. Those concerned should first visit with their primary care physician.
“Consult your doctor and relay concerns. It may save your life,” says Wayment.
