Procedure - Accutane (Isotretinoin)

Accutane, or Isotretinoin, is a prescription medication therapy to treat severe acne. People sometimes think of Accutane as a teen acne medication, but plenty of people in their 20’s and 30’s also use this drug for stubborn or cystic acne. If your acne hasn’t responded to other forms of treatment or if you’ve experienced painful, severe breakouts or acne scars, Accutane could be the solution for you.

Accutane is a powerful acne medication that can only be prescribed by a professional dermatologist, dermatologist assistant, or a physician. Visit an Ogden Clinic dermatologist if your acne persists after other forms of treatment such as topical cleansers and lifestyle changes. Accutane is an excellent option for severe cystic acne (called nodular acne).

How does Accutane work?

Accutane works by decreasing facial oil (or sebum) production. High sebum production can lead to painful acne, severe breakouts, and even permanent scarring. Accutane shrinks the oil glands of the face, chest, and back, causing a significant decrease in acne. It is an oral medication that is usually taken twice daily for 15-20 weeks.

About 40% of Utahans experience a permanent cure of their acne when treated with Accutane. Other patients have dramatic improvements that usually last one to several years. It may be necessary to undergo another round of Accutane (or a different acne medication) for continued results.

Is Accutane right for everyone?

Northern Utah residents with severe acne or acne that causes scarring are great candidates for Accutane. It may also be an option for people with less severe acne that has not been managed effectively with other treatments. Accutane is safe for adults and teenagers over age 12. Women who are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant should not use Accutane. Talk to your physician about the current medications and supplements you take.
