Audiometric Testing

Audiometric tests are conducted to determine the level at which frequencies and sounds are audible. These tests are conducted in a soundproof room with specialized equipment.

Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs)

OAEs evaluate sensory (cochlear function). OAEs are not dependent on behavioral responses and therefore can be recorded from patients unable to perform behavioral audiometric tasks, such as patients suspected of functional hearing loss, and infants and young children.

Acoustic Immittance

Acoustic immittance measurements identify middle ear abnormalities. The compliance of the eardrum and function for the eustachian tube are evaluated by changing the air pressure in the ear canal. In addition to the function of the middle ear, acoustic immittance measures are useful in obtaining information on the status of the peripheral auditory nervous system.

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)

ABR provides objective information about sensory and neural auditory function. It is conducted using computer-averaged electronic responses produced by the auditory nerve and the brainstem after the presentation of an auditory stimulus.
