Procedure - Hand Surgery

Have you recently injured your hand? Perhaps you have a congenital defect of the hand that you would like to correct? At Ogden Clinic in Utah, our specialists perform a variety of different hand surgery procedures to correct injuries, birth defects, combat infections, and treat the effects of diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. Some of the hand surgery procedures performed at Ogden Clinic include:

Tendon Repair

Tendons are extremely important as they are the fiber that holds muscles to the bones. People often have tendon injuries in their hand as a result of trauma (like a fall) or infection. Tendon repair is a complicated surgical procedure that can be used as a primary or secondary treatment option, depending on the severity of tendon injury.

Skin Grafts

When a patient’s hand is missing part of the skin, an Ogden Clinic specialist may use a skin graft to help the injured area heal. A skin graft is a piece of healthy skin taken from a donor site on the patient’s body, and is attached to the injured area of the hand.

Skin Flaps

Like a skin graft, a skin flap uses a section of skin from a donor site to address a hand injury. The skin flap, however, uses a piece of skin, as well as the underlying blood vessels, muscles, and fat. A skin flap hand surgery is required when the tissue of the hand is severely damaged or lacking blood supply.

Joint Replacement

When a patient has severe arthritis, an Ogden Clinic specialist may recommend joint replacement surgery, or arthroplasty. During this type of hand surgery, a damaged, arthritic joint is replaced with an artificial one.

Closed Reduction and Fixation

When a patient has a broken bone in their hand or wrist, a doctor will used closed reduction and fixation to realign the bone and then immobilize it with fixtures like wires, splints, or casts.

Surgical Drainage

If a patient has a hand infection, surgical drainage may be used to remove pus from a sore or abscess in the hand.

Replantation

This hand surgery procedure is used when a finger or entire hand has been severed from the body. The goal is to reattach the body part and restore as much function as possible.
