Procedure - Laceration Repair

Lacerations are wounds that happen when skin, tissue, and/or muscle is cut open or torn. These types of wounds can result from animal bites, punctures, or being hit with an object. Most lacerations require some form of medical stitches to keep the wound closed, ensure proper healing and prevent infection. When you have a wound that needs attention, come to Ogden Clinic in Utah for laceration repair and medical stitches.

Lacerations vary in size, shape, and depth. Minor lacerations that are shallow and do not bleed can be treated with antibiotic ointment and a bandage. For anything more serious, it is important to seek medical attention.

Types of Open Wounds that Require Laceration Repair

  • Incisions caused by sharp objects like broken glass, razors, or knives
  • Puncture wounds caused by a needle, animal bite, or other objects
  • Tear-like wounds caused by trauma such as getting caught in a barbed wire fence
  • Penetration wounds where an object was inserted and removed from the skin, such as a knife

Depending on the depth and severity of your laceration, an Ogden Clinic specialist will choose one of the following treatments to ensure the wound heals properly without infection.

Sutures (Stitches): Sutures are one of the most common forms of laceration repair, as they allow your doctor to tightly close the wound for maximum healing. Depending on your wound, your doctor will use either non-absorbable stitches made of silk or nylon, or absorbable stitches which dissolve into the body over time. Stitches are very precise and reduce scarring.

Staples: Staples are another form of laceration repair. They are commonly used for scalp lacerations, as they are not as precise as stitches, but the patient’s hair will cover up any scarring. Staples can also be placed more quickly than stitches.

Tissue Adhesives: Tissue adhesives are appropriate for minor lacerations that are not embedded with any debris, on areas of the body that are not used for movement, such as the calf.

When you have an open wound, come to Ogden Clinic in Utah for laceration repair and wound treatment like medical stitches.
