Procedure - Scrotal Lesion Removals

Do you have a lump on your scrotum? At Ogden Clinic in Utah, our urologists are trained to perform scrotal lesion removals for testing and cancer screening. A lesion is an area of an organ or tissue which has been damaged from an injury or disease, such as wound or tumor.

Symptoms of Scrotal Lesions

Patients may experience different symptoms of scrotal lesions, but some common signs include:

  • Sudden onset of pain
  • Strange lump
  • Dull aching pains in the scrotum
  • Pain throughout the groin, lower back, and abdominal areas
  • Tender and/or swollen testicles
  • Swelling and/or redness of the scrotum
  • Nausea and/or vomiting

What Causes Scrotal Lesions?

Several underlying medical conditions can be responsible for scrotal lesions, one of the most common being testicular cancer. Men with tumors or growths in their scrotum may experience one of the above symptoms, or none at all, so it is important to tell your doctor immediately if you notice an abnormal growth on your scrotum.

Diagnosis and Treatment

To properly diagnose a scrotal lesion, your doctor will perform a variety of tests to determine whether it is infection, inflammation, or something more serious. Some of these tests include a physical exam, an ultrasound, urine and blood test, CT (computed tomography) scan, or transillumination.

Both benign and cancerous tumors can be removed through scrotal lesion removal at Ogden Clinic. Even benign tumors can cause pain and discomfort. Ultimately, your doctor will assess the tumor through biopsy and examination before making a surgical plan.

If the tumor is benign, your doctor can leave the lesion alone, drain it, or remove it surgically. This all depends on how uncomfortable the tumor is, if it puts you at risk of infertility, or if it becomes infected. If the tumor is cancerous, however, your doctor may want to perform a radical inguinal orchiectomy, which removes the affected testicle and spermatic cord.
