Procedure - Casting

When you break a bone or sprain an appendage, it is crucial to seek out a cast or bandaging at Ogden Clinic as soon as possible. Proper casting and bandage treatments can immobilize an injury quickly and efficiently, greatly decreasing recovery time and likelihood of re-injury. Your doctor will likely use an X-ray machine to confirm where the location of the break is and choose a type of cast accordingly. Having the right cast can ensure that a broken bone heals properly and without risk of further injury.

Types of Casts

Plaster: A plaster cast is the most affordable and traditional method of casting and can be used for nearly every kind of broken bone. Because they are prone to mold, plaster casts need to be kept dry, so it is important to cover the cast with plastic and seal it with duct tape when bathing. If possible, keep the limb covered in the plaster cast out of the shower or bath completely.

Fiberglass: The other material option for casting broken bones is fiberglass. Fiberglass is a kind of plastic that can be molded like plaster. Fiberglass casts are generally more expensive, but they are more lightweight and more durable than plaster casts. They can also come in a variety of colors. Many fiberglass casts come with a water-repellant liner, so they can get wet. Make sure to speak with your doctor before bathing with your fiberglass cast on. To be safe, you can always cover it in plastic wrap and secure it with duct tape.

Cast Maintenance

Aside from protecting the cast during bathing, it is important to take a few other steps to reduce swelling and itchiness. Whenever possible, elevate the casted limb above your heart. This will keep swelling to a minimum. You should also use ice to help with the swelling and to minimize discomfort. Remember, if your skin feels itchy under your cast never stick anything, like a coat hanger for example, down there to scratch it. This can break the skin and result in an infection. Instead, use a hair dryer on the cool setting and point it down into the cast.

Contact one of our orthopedic doctors at Ogden Clinic if you have a broken bone and need a cast. We will pinpoint the location of your break, and find the perfect cast to help you recover quickly and safely.
