Microneedling is a skin rejuvenation procedure used on patients who wish to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars on the face and body. Microneedling is also referred to as collagen induction therapy, and is a minimally-invasive treatment available at Ogden Clinic offices across Northern Utah.
Microneedling uses a medical-grade roller covered in tiny needles to create small puncture wounds across the surface of the skin. During this process, the body’s natural wound healing response kicks in and the body starts producing collagen and elastin, which thicken and plump up the skin. This procedure helps the body to naturally produce younger looking skin through the healing response and can be used on the face and various areas of the body. The needles cause minimal trauma to the treated area, but to prevent discomfort your doctor may use a topical or local anesthetic.
The length of the needles on the medical-grade roller will depend on your goals. Longer needles, for example, penetrate deeper into the skin, producing more substantial results. A microneedling treatment will take anywhere from 10-60 minutes depending on the area of your body being treated.
After the procedure, your skin may be slightly red or pink, and you may experience bruising and bleeding. These side effects should be minimal and will ultimately depend on the length of needle used during your procedure. Most patients recover within 1-3 days, and begin to see results 4-8 weeks following treatment.
As with all other elective cosmetic procedures, microneedling is appropriate for candidates who have realistic expectations about the results, understand the risks, and are in generally good health. Microneedling treatment is appropriate for people of all skin types, unlike some other skin rejuvenation procedures such as certain chemical peels or laser treatments. Patients who show signs of premature aging, those with fine lines and wrinkles, skin laxity, and those with scarring from injuries, surgery, acne, or chicken pox, are all suitable candidates for the microneedling procedure at Ogden Clinic.
