What Our Patients Are Saying About a New Treatment for Enlarged Prostate

Nearly 12 million men in the U.S. suffer from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), commonly called enlarged prostate. BPH causes problems like frequent and weak urinary streams and sleep deprivation due to getting up throughout the night.

In the past, there have been two common options to treat BPH. You could either take daily medication to suppress the symptoms or undergo TURP surgery: an invasive procedure that requires an overnight hospital stay. Since both options often present side effects or complications, over 50% of men with BPH choose to do nothing.

Ogden Clinic urologists recently introduced a breakthrough procedure for BPH that’s safe, minimally-invasive, and office-based. It’s called Rezum® Water Vapor Therapy. FDA cleared in 2016, Rezum® improves quality of life and preserves sexual function.

Here’s what Ogden Clinic Patients Have to Say about Rezum®

Kevin Cummings

“I was waking up three to four times a night. My BPH had gotten so bad that I visited Dr. Wayment to discuss TURP surgery. I was prepared to have TURP surgery, and in fact, Dr. Wayment told me about this new procedure during my pre-op visit. We backed away from the TURP surgery and chose to schedule Rezum® therapy instead.”

When asked about the procedure itself, Kevin said “It was really remarkable. Start to finish, it only took about an hour. I received oral sedative and local anesthesia then napped during most of the procedure. Recovery was much more manageable than TURP would have been. I had a catheter for five days, afterward I was symptom free.”

Kevin says his quality of life has improved since the procedure. “Little things like being able to go on road trips without frequent stops make me happy. I can sit through a whole movie… I can even drink a soda during the movie without getting up!”

Peter Zolich

Another patient of Dr. Wayment’s, Peter Zolich, has a similar experience to share.

“My wife asked me to visit Dr. Wayment because we were both losing sleep due to me getting up at night. She knew Dr. Wayment because he removed a kidney stone for her. In the past, I’d tried a couple different medications, but they all came with side effects that I wasn’t a fan of.”

Peter adds “Rezum® was a game changer for me. The worst part was the catheter, but that’s a small price to pay for my results. Within a month, I was symptom free. I’ve shared my experience with coworkers and friends, urging them to look into Rezum® as well.”

What are the symptoms of BPH?

You’re not alone if you suspect you may have an enlarged prostate. Nearly 50% of men over the age of 50 will suffer from some sort of urinary dysfunction in their lifetime.

The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) was created to help determine the proper treatment that a patient may need to help manage his BPH symptoms. You can check your IPSS score by taking this quiz.

How is Rezum® Different?

Rezum Process

A one-time procedure: Ditch medications that need to be taken every day. Rezum® gives men noticeable symptom improvements within two weeks.

It’s quick: Unlike surgeries that last an hour or longer, Rezum® treatment is finished in a matter of minutes. Rezum® is performed in-office by one of our trained urologists.

It’s minimally-invasive: During treatment, patients receive local anesthesia to reduce discomfort. A slender needle is guided into the urethra with built-in radiofrequency energy. Once in place, water vapor is injected into the prostate tissue, causing the cells to die almost immediately. Over time, you body absorbs the treated tissue as part of its natural healing response.
