What Is Sinusitis and How Can It Be Treated?

Sinusitis is a condition that affects 10% of people every year and usually spikes during the spring and summer months. With that in mind, we sat down with Dr. Nadim Bikhazi, ENT Specialist at Ogden Clinic, to ask him what sinusitis is and what can be done to treat it.

Q: What are the most common things that you see as an ENT specialist?

A: Some of the most common are sinus and allergy afflictions – we see that commonly in Utah. It’s important for people to understand that allergies can be properly diagnosed and treated. We do full-scope allergy testing here at Ogden Clinic.

Sever allergies can often cause chronic sinusitis, which is one condition that I really enjoy treating. It occurs when the spaces inside your nose and head (sinuses) are inflamed and swollen for 90 days or longer, despite treatment. Chronic sinusitis can also be caused by nasal polyps, respiratory tract infections, and a deviated nasal septum. Methods for diagnosing chronic sinusitis are fairly straightforward and include imaging tests and nasal discharge cultures.

Proper sinusitis treatment can make a tremendous difference in a person’s quality of life – providing relief for people who suffer from sinus headaches, sinus discharge, pressure, pain, or frequent infections.

Q: What is the best treatment for sinusitis?

A: Antibiotics are the first step. If antibiotics don’t work (or are in danger of being used too often), then balloon sinuplasty is usually the next step.

Balloon sinuplasty is a very quick, outpatient endoscopic nasal surgery. A small balloon is used to expand the passageways to your nasal sinuses to drain to allow them to drain. The procedure requires no incisions or loss of nasal tissue, and has a very short recovery time. People usually go back to work the same day.
