This is Not a Normal Period | Fibroid Awareness Month

Heavy periods? Feeling like you constantly need to use the bathroom? Many women chalk these symptoms up to aging, stress, or life after having children. But they could be caused by uterine fibroids.

Fibroids are noncancerous growths in or around the uterus that affect millions of women. The good news? They don't always require surgery, and new minimally invasive treatments are changing the way they're managed. For Fibroid Awareness Month, let's explore some symptoms that might seem normal, but should be discussed with your OB/GYN.

"I've always had heavy periods."

If you're soaking through pads or tampons, passing large clots, or your period is disrupting work or daily life, don't assume it's just your normal. Fibroids are one of the most common causes of heavy menstrual bleeding, and they affect up to 80% of women.

"I guess I have a small bladder."

Fibroids can press against the bladder, making you feel like you need to urinate more often—even if you haven't had much to drink. Larger fibroids can also create a feeling of fullness or pelvic pressure.

"Low back pain is part of getting older."

While back pain has many causes, larger fibroids can place pressure on nearby muscles and nerves, leading to aching in the lower back or pelvis. Pain during intercourse can also be a symptom, depending on where the fibroids are located.

"If it is fibroids, I might need a hysterectomy."

Not necessarily. Dr. Talon Anderson now offers Acessa® and Sonata®, two minimally invasive treatments that shrink fibroids using radiofrequency energy while preserving the uterus.

  • Acessa® is performed through a few tiny abdominal incisions and is ideal for many fibroids located within or on the outside of the uterus.
  • Sonata® requires no abdominal incisions. It uses an ultrasound-guided device inserted through the vagina and cervix to treat certain fibroids from inside the uterus.

Unlike traditional surgery, these outpatient procedures spare your uterus and often involve less pain, minimal scarring, and a faster recovery.

Fibroids develop in up to 80% of women. The symptoms aren't just something you have to live with.

If heavy periods, pelvic pressure, or frequent urination are affecting your daily life, schedule an evaluation. Whether your symptoms are caused by fibroids or something else, getting the right diagnosis is the first step.

Dr. Talon Anderson is an OB/GYN who's taking new patients to discuss their symptoms and possible fibroids. He can also share more about the Acessa® and Sonata® treatments available in his office. Dr. Anderson practices at Intermountain Layton Parkway Hospital in Layton, Utah. Schedule by calling (801) 475-3100.
