Procedure - Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy

Do you suffer from painful muscles or limited mobility? At Ogden Clinic, we have specialists in osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMT) to gently reinvigorate muscles and restore function. This is a hands-on treatment option which can be used as an individual treatment, or in conjunction with medication and surgery. The purpose of OMT is to reduce the tightness and restriction in muscles and nerves through calculated and gentle joint and tissue manipulations.

Is OMT for Me?

OMT is a treatment option that can be used on people of all ages and backgrounds, from infants to the elderly. The benefits of OMT include reduced pain, greater mobility, and faster healing for numerous conditions. It can supplement other treatment options, and in some case can actually replace the use of medication or surgery. Patients with a variety of conditions can be treated with OMT including those with:

  • Asthma
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Knee Pain
  • Lower Back Pain
  • Menstrual Pain
  • Migraines
  • Neck Pain
  • Sinus Disorders
  • Shoulder Problems

An osteopathic specialist at Ogden Clinic will review your medical history and current condition to determine if OMT treatment is right for you.

How It Works

During an OMT treatment the osteopathic specialist will use their hands to apply gentle pressure, resistance, or stretching to different tissues and joints throughout the body. The practice of OMT includes many different techniques, including:

Muscle Energy:For this technique, you will move your muscles in a specific direction, while your doctor counters the movement. This is a push-pull motion.

Soft Tissue: This technique uses pressure and stretching on the muscles.

Myofascial Release: During this technique, your doctor will apply firm, yet gentle pressure to release tension in the fascia. Fascia is the layer of connective tissue that surrounds the muscles, organs, and bones.

Osteopathic Cranial Manipulative Medicine: For this technique, your doctor will apply soft pressure to your skull in order to stimulate the healing process.

If you are suffering from painful muscles and joints, you may be a good candidate for osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMT) at Ogden Clinic. Call one of our Utah offices today to schedule an appointment and learn more about how OMT could help you heal.
