Procedure - Vasectomy

Are you a man looking for a permanent and effective form of birth control? A vasectomy, or male sterilization, is a common form of birth control for men which cuts the supply of sperm to semen, preventing eggs from being fertilized during intercourse. Vasectomies are minimally invasive outpatient procedures performed under local anesthesia, posing few risks or complications. Ogden Clinic offers vasectomy procedures at offices across Northern Utah.

Benefits of a Vasectomy

Many men choose to have a vasectomy procedure at Ogden Clinic because:

  • Vasectomies are a safe and effective form of birth control for men who no longer want to father a child.
  • Vasectomies are nearly 100 percent effective in preventing pregnancy.
  • Vasectomies cost less than female sterilization (tubal ligation) and are a more cost-effective option than long-term use of condoms or birth control pills.
  • A vasectomy is an outpatient procedure which has very few side effects or long-term complications.
  • Other forms of birth control will no longer be necessary following a vasectomy.

How It Works

A vasectomy procedure is simple and only takes approximately 10 to 30 minutes to complete. The doctor will begin by numbing the surgical area with an injection of local anesthetic to the scrotum. After the area is numb, he/she will then make a small incision along the upper portion of the scrotum with a scalpel or make a small puncture for a “no-scalpel” technique. The doctor then identifies the location of the vas deferens (the tube which carries sperm from the testicles) and withdraws part of it out of the incision or puncture.

The doctor will cut the vas deferens and seal it by cauterizing it, applying surgical clips, tying it, or a combination of these methods. The ends of the vas deferens are then placed back inside of the scrotum, and the incision is closed with glue or stiches, or left to close on its own. After the procedure, patients may experience mild bruising, swelling, and/or pain, which should subside within a few days.
